Subject:Long week
Time:10:46 pm.
Mood: exhausted.
It's been a long week, but not a bad one. Tonight is relaxing at home, tomorrow is my last garb-making afternoon, Sunday is preparations day.

Then I work Monday through Wednesday. I have next Thursday off to pack and shop, and then next Friday is Pennsic. Hot. Damn.

Mood: content.
The Move: Complete.

Thanks a whole hell of a lot to the folks who helped. I would not have been able to get from point A to point B without the aid of [info]thatwhichisgene, [info]necrocannibal, [info]pictsy, [info]maroonmd, [info]anizee, [info]wink_ihsan and [info]jszmajda. I still owe you all greatly.

The House: Owned.

As in literally. As of this past Thursday, I am a Home (co-)Owner. I'm still kind of amazed at this, but yeah. The house needs to be warmed by all of you, but that will probably have to wait until after The Vacation.

The Vacation: Soon.

I leave for Pennsic on July 25th, and I will come back on August 10th. This will be the longest vacation I've taken in *years*. I am totally psyched.

All in all, things are good within the lands of Alex.

Subject:Reflections
Time:11:34 pm.
Mood: contemplative.
Music:DJ Shadow - Best Foot Forward.
While doing some packing this evening, I browsed through my music collection and decided to put on DJ Shadow's, "Best Foot Forward."

I can still remember that [info]jwiv gave me this MP3 of the entire album back at Digex/Intermedia/Whatever. I can also remember vividly putting this 40-minute long track on during a particularly slow overnight in the NCC and blissfully taking a nap under my desk (don't tell [info]jwiv, he was my boss at the time).

Anyway, if you'd like, tell me about some music you have in your collection that someone else gave you and a memory you have about listening to that music.

I may even put another in the comments!

How is it that it's only Tuesday? Holy crap am I exhausted.

This past weekend I went up to PA to visit my mother and grandmother for Mother's Day, which involved an unpleasant amount of driving.

Saturday: Drive from Laurel to Pittsburgh (approx 4 hours)
Sunday: Drive from Pittsburgh to Monongahela (Approx 1.25 hours)
Drive from Monongahela to Pittsburgh (another 1.25 hours in the rain)
Drive from Pittsburgh to Laurel (approx 5 hours in the deluge)

I'm tired of driving and tired in general. Luckily, I've got something fun this weekend, then some relaxation. Two weekends from now, I've got a 3-day weekend due to a holiday, then I've taken that Friday off to head up to PA for a wedding. That means that I'll have a 3-day weekend, a 3-day work week then another 3-day weekend. That will be *nice.*

In other news, the 48 Hour Film Project went well this year. There will be more on this and the screening once we get the actual film online. [info]cavenessity is working hard to get everything up and running for that, and I'll pass word the moment I get it.

In biggest news, I am moving. At the end of next month, I will be moving from Laurel to Silver Spring, to become housemates with [info]blindtillnow. This will put me right inside the beltway, as well as 13 miles closer to work. I will be moving much of my stuff in small loads between now and the end of June, but there will be a big-ish moving day for the major furniture. Any and all help will be appreciated. I'd like to get movers, but my finances right now really don't have room for them. Hopefully with the new place and the new commute I will be able to save some cash.

Then, about two weeks after moving into Silver Spring, I will be going to Pennsic.

Somewhere in there I will catch a nap.

For anyone interested, we have our screening next Thursday, a week from tomorrow at 7pm. That's at the AFI Silver Spring, 7pm, May 8th. If you're interested, buy your tix now, as these *always* sell out.

Wish us luck!

I blame the zombies. Lazy, good for nothing zombies. Anyway, I hope that everyone who was interested in seeing this fine, fine film with me this Friday will still be available next Friday.

So.

You're fed up. Maybe your love left you, maybe your job stinks, maybe it's just that no one understands you. Whatever. You're done.

This leads to you constructing a giant mechanical spider war machine. It may even be steam-powered. You know, like you do.

What songs would you listen to while wreaking havoc and destruction?

I see the soundtrack having five parts:
1. Prelude - Strapping yourself in, checking dials and switches.
2. Moving into the City - Your giant spider war machine moves out of your lair and appears on the horizon outside the city that will receive your wrath.
3. Wrath! - This is you, fucking shit up.
4. The People Fight Back - The army is called, causing a climactic battle
5. The Aftermath - Do you survive? Do you win? Do you die?

My answers in the comments.

No, wait. I'll be dancin' with myself.

Subject:The Tale of the Toe
Time:2:20 am.
Mood: okay.
In my martial arts class, I sometimes get hurt.

During the course of any given class, I may end up with some sore muscles or a small bruise, but nothing serious. Before the toe, the worst thing I'd done was jam my shoulder into the floor while cracking my head at the same time during an attempt to drop and roll out of the way of a sword cut. My head was fine, but my shoulder was sore and stiff for a few days afterward.

The effects of the toe have been a bit longer.

Back in mid-December we were practicing two things - a basic hip throw as well as how to do a maneuver to land on your feet after a hip throw.

The hip throw is pretty simple, actually, and really effective. We started off in a basic stance: feet shoulder width apart, right hand grasping the uke's left "lapel," left hand grasping the uke's right sleeve, right around the back of the elbow, uke mirroring the holds back. The person executing the throw would then step to the side with their left leg and then step behind the uke with their right leg, to end up with their right hip in the small of the uke's back. A small shift of the body and a gentle coax with the arms (still in the same places), and the uke is off their feet. The person executing the throw can then either drop them or do any number of nasty hurty things.

In this example, however, the uke was learning to do a flipover, so that when their weight is taken, they can come fully over and land on their feet. Yay, everybody wins. Except for me!

No shit, there I was. As this was my first time trying this, my partner and I took it slowly, at first we just practiced the opening movements and taking the uke off their feet. I learned the feeling of both, what it felt like to have someone else's weight supported on my hip and the physics of what changes in my stance would do to their movement, as well as how it felt to be taken off my feet with my body's movements being mostly dictated by what they did with their arm or position of their legs. Nifty stuff.

When we moved on to trying out the flipover part, I started out with doing the throwing parts of the maneuver and having my partner flip out (no one got kicked in the face, though). When it came my turn to try flipping, I opted to have a pad put down on the floor, just in case I screwed up royally. The pad in place, we got started. I stood there, my partner stepped around and then pulled me up off my feet, all according to plan. I then tried the flip over, and actually cleared my partner with no problems. The problems happened right afterwards.

You know how in olympic gymnastics they make a big deal about how whether or not the person "sticks the landing?" Turns out the landing is pretty important in the martial arts, too. I came over my partner's shoulder, but didn't keep the form well enough so that I actually landed *hard* on my left knee and my left big toe simultaneously. To make things worse, I missed the pad entirely. Knee and toe, meet hardhard floor.

That class was the first time I ever left early. I felt like a wuss because of it, but I was in some pretty steady pain and my toe was beginning to bleed from under the nail. Over the next few days, my toe was sore, stiff, swollen and bruised. Lovely purples and blacks under the skin and nail, but everything cleared up well before my New Year's trip to NOLA. Everything except the nail.

Very early on, I noticed an odd sensation with my toenail. That sometimes when I would step with my left foot, the toenail would subtly shift. The first time I tried to trim the nail, I was shocked to have it FLIP UP OFF MY TOE. Squicked, I quickly lashed it back down with a band-aid. It seemed to stay attached for a long while - weeks, even! But tonight after my shower it finally gave up the ghost. As I gently pulled my band-aid off, my big toenail came with it in its entirety.

I am grossed out by the whole thing, but kind of glad that it made up its damn mind to finally drop off. Happily, there is already some new growth coming in, so I will have a new toenail in a couple of months.

(I'm sure you all will be happy to know that I took some pictures along this strange journey, and I should have them posted here by the end of the week. Woo, oogy toe!)

Subject:Are we having fun yet?
Time:2:56 am.
Mood: exhausted.
Week two of overnights and I already am resorting to caffeine pills to help stay awake. No matter what I try, though, I seem to average about four to five hours of sleep a day. I'm feeling exhausted both physically and emotionally. This too, will pass, but until then I'm tired and cold and lonely.

I had extra-disturbing dreams the other night. I had been kidnapped by a horrible group of people who indulged in all kinds of f'd up behavior for fun, including intimating that they had infected my food with some kind of incurable disease. The last thing I remember is killing two or three people as I fought my way to freedom.

Anyway!

In better news, I was pointed to the [info]what_a_crock community by [info]nexussix, and thusly to this recipe. As I woke up this afternoon just before 3pm, I had plenty of time (8 hours) to hit the grocery store and put everything together. I made some modifications to the recipe as listed - using bitter marmalade, adding peas, carrots, onions, potatoes and coconut milk as well as using boneless chicken thighs rather than breasts (already cheaper but then also on sale!). I had round one for my meal (lunch? dinner? Meals, like time, are ELASTIC) tonight when I got to work. Not bad, if I do say so myself. Next time sweet marmalade and some actual hot peppers, I think. I have enough in the fridge at home for lunches and dinner for at least the next three days. Experiments will continue apace.

Also in food news, I found out through both [info]turbogrrl and [info]jukebox_heroine about The Kielbasa Factory. The best part is that this is *not* a pr0n site! I will need to make a trip there soonly for the sausages of my ethnic homeland. I have sampled the kielbasa at Cafe Mozart in DC, and while it's good, it's not my family recipe. This means I will also need to get with [info]squeegibo for another round of sausage-making. Perhaps a party for sausages. There's probably a name for something like that, but it escapes me at this time.

I haven't updated this thing in over a month. It's been a long month, too. Sorry about that.

-Christmas! Christmas involved a load of driving. I went up to PA to visit with the family. I got some good schwag, including a new tent for Pennsic! I should have a swank pad this year. After the driving up to PA and back again, then came New Year's.

-New Years! I went and tore up New Orleans. I have a load of pictures to show you all, but I've been slack and haven't off-loaded them from my camera yet.
Highlights included:
.Walking tour of the French Quarter
.Walking tour of the Garden District
.Night-time walking tour of a bunch of cemeteries
.Cafe du Monde
.Drinking in the streets
.Damn fine gumbo
.Excellent, wonderful company

When I get my photos up and running, I'll give a more detailed run-down. Suffice to say it was incredible.

There feels like there should be more, and there probably is, but this will have to do for now.

How've you all been?
